The XRby Matteo Stauffacher Watch, Expressione Romantica

The artisanal watch brand XRby has teamed up with talented architect, designer and enameller Matteo Stauffacher to create a stunning timepiece in cloisonné enamel.

XRby collaborates with master craftsmen, giving them the space to freely express their artistic talents. The most recent collaboration gave birth to "Espressione Romantica" by Matteo Stauffacher. Based in Lausanne, Matteo Stauffacher is an architect graduated from the EPF, designer and enameller who studied with Switzerland's leading enameller. His exploration of the artistic theme of "contrast" is undoubtedly inspired by the diversity of his professional career.

Indeed, "Espressione Romantica" is the embodiment of contrast. It represents the unlikely encounter of Francesco Hayez, a leading artist of Italian Romanticism, and Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of abstract art. The dial is a beautiful fusion of works by the two artists: "Il bacio" from 1859 and "Transverse line" from 1923.

Matteo Stauffacher's dial uses the cloisonné enamel technique, where the pattern is delimited by a gold wire and the alveolus are filled with enamel. The piece is fired several times and then polished to perfection.

A first in art watchmaking: an oscillating weight in cloisonné enamel like the dial, the face of the watch. In our quest for excellence, we have developed an oscillating weight that also allows the artist-craftsman to express his know-how on an element of the automatic movement.

A few figures:
It took more than 100 hours of work to allow this unlikely encounter between abstract art and romanticism, and 1 metre of 24k gold wire with a diameter of 0.60 mm to define the contours of the alveolus, each of which hosts one or more of the 26 colours chosen by the artist.

Our timepiece: Automatic movement manufactured in Switzerland with a power reserve of 86 hours, a frequency of 3hz and an enamel weight. The watch has a diameter of 40 mm, a sapphire case, and a palladium-plated gold openworked case back and logot crown.
